Unfortunately, we didn't make it by there to take any pictures this weekend, but I'm happy to report that your grim assessment of the reason for no updates was mistaken. The foal appears to be doing well, growing day by day, and enjoying the company of its mother. Thankfully, it's likely that the only way said foal is involved in 1st grade art projects is as inspiration.
